Baas, Beeps, Barks, and Gobbles

This is the first Promised Land Farm Newsletter for the customers and friends of Promised Land Farm. We hope to publish a periodic newsletter to let you know what is going on at the farm at this time and what we expect for the future. We designed the newsletter to be informative and perhaps to let you get a closer look into how we live and the things we are attempting to accomplish on the farm.

It is green again!!!!
A look out our window reveals the most beautiful green grass coming out of the ground again. The foundation that maintains our beautiful surroundings survived all the grazing and stomping from last year and a long sleep through the winter brought it back out to bring life to the many critters that call our farm home.

Our Promised Land critters lived through the winter eating "store bought food" or what we humans call hay. Even our feathered family (the goose, the turkeys, the chickens and the peacocks) seem to realize that their winter-feed was harvested last year or earlier. All of the critters are looking forward to the time when we will let them savor the fresh green that Mother Nature will provide this summer.

There seems to be a relationship between the taste of a store bought turkey at Thanksgiving and the taste of one of our fresh Promised Land Farm Pastured turkeys here.

Barks
We hosted our first two-day herding dog clinic in late March. Larry Painter, a world-class dog trainer, was at the farm to assist owners and their dogs in improving their herding skills. Larry flew in from Kansas City for the clinic. On the first day of the clinic Mother Nature sent a large hailstorm to complicate matters. Everyone exited to the safety of the shop area to wait out the storm. Several bales of straw were placed in one of the training areas to dry up some of the lakes that had formed due to the storm and the clinic continued. Participants in the clinic were pleased with the hints and suggestions that Larry made during the clinic. The cattle were agreeable to their first experience in herding. Larry stayed over on Monday to give private lessons to those who wanted additional exposure to his herding techniques.

How Now Brown Cow
When is a cow not a cow??? On the day before the herding clinic our friends told Jim they delivered ten head of cattle for the cattle part of the clinic. These beautiful creatures were herded into a special pasture with a new round bale of hay, fresh water and enough grain to keep them happy for quite a while. Early the next morning Jim received a frantic phone call from Nancy indicating that we had only nine head left in the pasture. Frantically Jim, Larry Painter, Nancy and a neighbor searched the surrounding acres for any sign of a cattle rustler or the tracks of a wandering cow. There were none to be found.

Perhaps the cow jumped over the moon the night before??? Now, after several frantic phone calls Nancy found out that, in fact, only nine cows were actually delivered.

The Beeps Are Here
One hundred layer chickens arrived at the Post Office the last week in March. As this newsletter is being written they are enjoying their first days in a stock tank in the house. After some discouraging brooding last year we decided to give them some time in the house before exposing them to farm life as free range chickens.

We plan to move them into their own pasture west of the house where they can spend the rest of their lives providing really good farm fresh eggs for our customers on a regular basis. Many of our customers have asked for this service and we have had fresh eggs available for sale from time to time at the farm. Plan on purchasing Farm Fresh Eggs from our pastured chickens sometime this fall.

Coming Soon
Later this summer we will have processed farm fresh pastured CHICKENS for sale at our farm. If you like the taste of our turkeys you will marvel at the taste of the chickens. We had a limited supply last year on a trial basis and customers are raving about the taste of these free range chickens. All of these chickens will be on day range on our pastures. CALL US NOW TO RESERVE YOUR CHICKENS. There will be a limited supply available.

Gobbling It Up
We have substantially increased our turkey order this year due to a greater demand for our "Promised Land Turkeys". We recognize that it is early to be thinking about Thanksgiving dinner but we want to update our order list as soon as possible. PLEASE CALL TO RESERVE YOUR TURKEY NOW. We will be visiting fairs and farmer's markets again this year but we want our repeat customers to be sure they have the same quality turkey on the table for their family as they have in past years.

Last year our farm and our farm fresh turkeys were part of a feature story in the Indianapolis Star.

This year we are offering a 10% discount for any present customer who sends a new customer to purchase a turkey from us. Just ask your friends to mention your name when they place their order and we will see that your turkey is discounted when you pick it up.
